Background: United States stock car ace David Pearson continued his string of racing victories in Hampton (USA) on Sunday (22 July) when he won the big Dixie 500 Stock Car race.
It was his ninth victory in ten races, and it raised his earnings so far to $986,000 U.S. (approximately 390,000 sterling).
For driving his Mercury to victory around the crowded Hampton circuit, he won $ 16,150 (approximately 5,800 sterling). It also made Pearson the second million dollar winner in United States stock car racing.
He held his lead for most of the last half of the 500-mile high speed race, beating his nearest opponent, Cale Yarborough by nearly two laps. Richard Petty, the other million dollar earner, who'd won the Dixie three times, blew out the engine in his Dodge.
