Background: Mohammed Ali - the one time World Heavyweight champion Cassius Clay - is to fight Floyd Paterson in New York on Wednesday (20 September).
In readiness for the bout, Ali has been working out at his own special training centre at Deer Lake, Pennsylvania. The centre has cost Ali 150,000 dollars - and provides the former champion with all the facilities he needs.
However, Ali's confidence in his ability to beat Paterson isn't shared by Paterson. He is seeking his tenth straight victory since his comeback after being twice heavyweight champion of the world, and says he can beat Ali.
Meanwhile at his Der Lake training centre, Ali has unveiled a photograph which superimposes a portrait of himself among the famous presidents on the Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
SYNOPSIS: A new training centre in Pennsylvania has been the headquarters of the effort to being Mohammed Ali to his physical best for Wednesday's fight against Floyd Paterson. Ali had the centre built for one hundred and fifty thousand dollars, and a ceremony held at the brand-new building shows that Ali has lost none of his self-confidence.
The picture unveiled by the former champion shows the Mount Rushmore National Memorial... with its immense granite statues of United States presidents. But the face in the place of Theodore Roosevelt looks somehow familiar.......
After the antics... the hard business of training. Ali is in the dark jacket. For both Ali and his opponent, Floyd Paterson, Wednesday's fight is important. Paterson says he's quietly confident that he can beat this man. Paterson is on the comeback trail and has held the world heavyweight championship twice. When he meets Ali on Wednesday, he'll be seeking his tenth straight win. Ali, on the other hand, exudes confidence. He's sure he can best Paterson, even though he admits Paterson was once his idol. For Ali, the big fight in New York is another step towards a re-match with the present world title holder, Joe Frazier. And it's to prepare him for that fight, rather than the Paterson bout, that Ali had this smart new training centre constructed.
