Background: Protective clothing for outer space exploration has ceased to be a thing of wonder, but a revolutionary light-weight fire fighting suit developed by a Swiss manufacturer, brought gasps of amazement at a recent demonstration.

Made from metallized fibre-glass material, the suit not only dispenses with the previous cumbersome asbestos coverall, but also incorporates an 'aqua-lung' breathing apparatus. This is invaluable when the fire-fighter is engulfed in thick only smoke, as he frequently is.

Developed for use in the flaming wrecks of crashed aircraft, the suit could mean life or death to both rescued and rescuer.
