The white supremacist regime of the Republic of South Africa has been condemned by the United Nations General Assembly for the continued suppression of the human rights and the political liberties of the black majority of that country in violation of the basic principles of the United Nations and its charter, and we demand that the United States Government and all United States organisations cease cultural, sporting and all other relations and exchanges with the Republic of South Africa."

Background: A petition calling for the expulsion of South Africa from the United Nations was released in the United Nations on Wednesday (10 December). The petition, which collected 100,000 signatures, was sponsored by a group to which prominent American black activist, Angela Davis, belongs.

The group, The National Anti-Imperialist Movement in Solidarity with African Liberation, presented the petition to Guinea ambassador, Jeanne Cisse, Chairperson of the Special Committee on Apartheid.

The same day (10 December) the United Nations General Assembly debated and passed a resolution condemning apartheid. The resolution, known as Resolution F. was passed much more quickly than expected when other proposals and sub-amendments to it were dropped by the countries that had been trying to tack them on.

Much of the debate centred around procedural issues and the resolution was passed by 101 votes to 15 with 16 abstentions.
