Background: To mark International Literacy Day, the Ethiopian leader, Chairman Mengistu Haile Mariam, On Tuesday (9 September) toured a rural has already won the country the 1980 literacy award of UNESCO -- the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.

SYNOPSIS: Chairman Mengistu visited the Cholo-Gudeti adult literacy centre in Kersa-Malimi district in Menagesha Province. The centre is currently conducting classes for almost eight hundred people. He told the assembled tribesmen of the benefits to be derived by introducing literacy, and also stressed the gains made in the short time since the launching of the national literacy drive.

Chairman Mengistu himself conducted a class. The literacy campaign was launched in July last year and more than six million people are now enrolled in different phases of the project. The first phase, introduced as a short-term programme, was aimed at enroling one point three million participants in urban areas. But it became so popular that more than five million people had enrolled only two months after the project was launched.

Chairman Mengistu said the country could feel proud of winning the UNESCO Literacy prize. But he said efforts needed to be redoubled to wine out illiteracy from Ethiopia in the planned period of seven years.
