    SOF ENDS.....tragic situations."

Speaking at a news conference in the Zambian capital of Lusaka, Mr. Banda said it would be difficult to find a solution to the Angolan problem.

"Mr. Chairman, I have already stated that Zambia would like to see the establishment of a united and prosperous Angola. In our view, the war currently raging in that country will leave in its train bitter memories to make it infinitely difficult to achieve genuine conciliations among the people of Angola. Zambia's stand on the question of Angola is, in my opinion, the correct one. We need no lessons from anyone, however powerful, in this regard, because we, like our brothers in Angola, fought for out independence, and in this regard, we will support, with everything at our disposal, the gallant armed struggle waged by the people of Angola. I wish to add that our support was not intended for the purpose for which the people of Angola now find themselves. Of late the government has been criticised by certain quarters in our society for its policy in Angola. We believe, that our policies are not against any one movement in that country but, on the contrary, we seek to avoid the senseless suffering of our brothers in that country. Several ideologies claiming to be more progressive than others are trying to take advantage of the situation for their own ends. We all must be honest with ourselves and refrain from exploiting such tragic situation."

Background: Zambian Foreign Minister Rupiah Banda has called for the cessation of what he termed "the exploitation of the tragic Angolan situation."
Speaking in the Zambian capital of Lusaka, Mr. Banda, said that there had recently been criticism "from certain quarters in Zambian society" of his government's policy towards Angola.

However, the Foreign Minister said he believed the Zambian policy was correct because it discriminated against none of the movements involved in the Angolan war.

He said the Zambian policy sought to avoid the senseless suffering of the Angolan people. The Foreign Minister added that Zambia would like to see a prosperous and unite Angola, "free from the senseless destruction that is now going on."
Later, he said that the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) could do little to change the situation in Angola.

This film is serviced with part of the speech made by Mr. Banda. The speech extract is in English, a transcript of which follows overleaf.
