Background: THE BITTER STRUGGLE BETWEEN REBELS AND PORTUGUESE TROOPS IN ANGOLA AND THE SWIFT CONQUEST OF GOA BY INDIAN TROOPS ARE SAID TO HAVE LEFT AND UNSETTLED CALM IN MOZAMBIQUE - PORTUGAL'S POSSESSION IN EAST AFRICA FOR 451 YEARS.

ACCORDING TO REPORTS, THE GOVERNOR OF LOURENCO MARQUES - WHERE OUR FILM WAS SHOT DEC 24 - HAS, ON INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE PORTUGUESE GOVERNMENT, INTERNED SOME 12,000 INDIAN NATIONALS RESIDENT IN THE TERRITORY. THIS IS THOUGHT TO BE PARTLY IN RETRIBUTION FOR INDIA'S ACTION IN GOA.

SHOPS AND HOMES BELONGING TO THESE INDIAN NATIONALISTS ARE REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN SEALED OFF BY GOVERNMENT DEGREE. IT WAS ANTICIPATED THAT IN DUE COURSE THE PROPERTIES WOULD BE SOLD TO OBTAIN COMPENSATION FOR ASSETS SEIZED IN GOA, AND THAT THE INTERNEES WOULD BE DEPORTED TO INDIA.

THERE HAS BEEN LITTLE VIOLENCE ON THE PART OF THE PORTUGUESE CIVILIAN POPULATION. BUT FEELINGS HAVE RUN HIGH AND THERE HAVE BEEN RUMOURS OF PLANS TO ATTACK INDIAN NATIONAL'S PROPERTY - A CLOSE WATCH IS BEING KEPT ON THIS BY THE AUTHORITIES.

SAID TO BE FURTHER CAUSE OF UNREST TO THE PORTUGUESE WAS THE GRANTING OF INDEPENDENCE TO THE NEARBY TERRITORY OF TANGANYIKA. ABOUT 1300 PORTUGUESE TROOPS WERE REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN SENT TO THE BORDER, AND THE FRIGATE "BARTHOLOMEW DIAZ" ANCHORED IN LOURENCO MARQUES HARBOUR.
