Background: A week-long reunification conference between representatives of both North South Vietnam ended is Saigon on Friday (21 November) with a joint communique calling for general elections in the first half of next year to elect a government to rule a united Vietnam.
At the end of the conference, the 25 member delegations from both sides toasted each other with French champagne.
The joint communique was signed by Mr. Pham Hung for South Vietnam and Mr. Tuong Chin for North Vietnam.
The signing of the joint communique took place in the chandeliered reception hall of the former Independence Palace almost seven months after the pro-United States regime of former President Nguyen Van Thieu fell to the pro-communist forces of the Vietcong.
The war which preceded the downfall of the Thieu regime lasted almost a quarter of a country.
More than thirty thousand people stood outside the Palace waving flags and banners bearing photos of the late North Vietnamese President Ho Chi Minh.
Both representatives of the Catholic and Buddhist faiths attended the ceremony in the Palace and pledged their support for the "building of a united and socialist country".
The official communique gave no specific date for the format reunification of the two Vietnams.
