Background: Ambassador Huang Chen flew into the United States on Monday (28 May) to head The People's Republic of China liaison office in Washington. He was accompanied by his wife and a twelve-member delegation.
After spending a night in New York, the Chinese diplomats flew to Washington where an advance party has established a temporary headquarters. The U.S. liaison office in Peking opened less than two weeks ago under Ambassador David Bruce. The opening of liaison offices is short of full diplomatic recognition but clears the way for much closer contact between the two powers.
Mr. Huang is a member of The People's Republic of China Central Committee of the Communist Party. He has served as Ambassador to Hungary, Indonesia and France.
