Over 1,000 guests saw spectacles recalling Japan's diverse culture and lengthy history. Among the garden-party's highlights was a performance of the Bugaku dance - brought from China 1600 years ago - and now only danced on ceremonial occasions; its slow-moving rhythm is accented by ancient lutes and oboes, and bears striking resemblance to Indian and Indonesian dancer.
Polo - also brought from China, 1500 years ago - fell into general dis-use in the 14th Century, but is another facet of their culture the Japanese keep for special occasions.
