Background: Boxing -- and Rafael Orono of Venezuela has retained his world super flyweight title in a fight against fellow-countryman Jovita Rengifo. The scheduled 15-round bout, which took place in the Venezuelan city of Barquisimeto on Tuesday night (16 September), was stopped in the third round.

SYNOPSIS: Orono, the World Boxing Council champion, went on the attack right from the start, and by the second round there was little doubt about the outcome of the fight.

Before the end of the second the challenger, Rengifo, had been forced to take mandatory count. And as the third round got underway, he was soon in trouble again.

Rengifo was ranked third in the flyweight category by the World Boxing Council until he moved up to super flyweight.

Orono clearly outclassed his opponent, and with Rengifo pinned helplessly against the ropes the referee stopped in to halt the fight after 56 seconds of the third round.

A comparatively straightforward victory for Orono -- but one which consolidated his hold on the super flyweight title.

The match was the first time two Venezuelans had ever competed for world boxing championship.
