Background: President Suharto of Indonesia on Friday (Apr 4) assured Australian Prime Minister Mr. Gough Whitlam that Indonesia had no territorial ambitions toward Portuguese Timor.
President Suharto, who is on a short Australian visit added that Indonesia had no intentions of military expansion. He gave these assurances during a second round of private talks with Mr. Whitlam.
The two leaders met privately at a cattle station at Brandon about 83 kilometres south of Townsville in Queensland. The two leaders conversation about Portuguese Timor is believed to be based on press that Indonesia was preparing to invade the colony. President Suharto and Prime Minister Whitlam also spoke about China and the Vietnam situation.
