Background: WITH MONTE CARLO COMPETITORS FACING THEIR THIRD NIGHT ON THE ROAD. MOST ARE ALREADY SAYING THAT THIS YEAR'S RALLY IS THE EASIEST THEY CAN REMEMBER. THIS MORNING LESS THAN TEN OF THE ORIGINAL 299 STARTERS HAD DROPPED OUT. UNHAPPILY FOR BRITISH HOPES THEY INCLUDED SIDNEY ALLARD, FORMER WINNER OF THE EVENT WHO RAMMED A LEVEL CROSSING IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA LAST NIGHT (SUNDAY).

APART FROM THE ATHENS CONTINGENT WHICH STARTED IN A HEAVY SNOWSTORM COMPETITORS HAVE HAD FAIRLY REASONABLE DRIVING CONDITIONS ON ALL ROUTES. BUT TONIGHT AS THEY CONVERGE ON FRANCE THEY FACE WARNINGS OF THICK FOG AND ICE.

TOMORROW ALL CARS CONVERGE ON RHEIMS IN FRANCE. FROM THEN ON IT IS A COMMON ROUTE FOR ALL COMPETITORS TO MONTE CARLO.
