Background: A further set-back for American steel mills: steel men have returned to work after the long strike - most of them compelled to do so by the court injunction ordering an 80-day "cooling off" period - but now there is a hold-up in raw material supplies.

In Duluth, Minnesota, U.S.A., it has been the coldest November in 86 years. If the weather continues to deteriorate, the steel mills of the mid-west, producing nearly half of America's steel, will be faced with serious shortages of ore. At the time of filming, November 17, 20 ice-covered ore-carrying ships were waiting to be loaded in the harbour of Duluth.

In bitterly cold weather, iron ore being brought by rail from the north to Duluth, Lake Superior, has been arriving frozen in the railway trucks. The task of thawing out the trucks is delaying ships, waiting to carry the ore to mid-west steel mills, by up to four days.

Every day is vital as the Lake shipping season is now drawing to its close with the onset of winter, and the railways cannot replace the ships in getting sufficient ore to the mills.
