Background: More trouble in Belgium - this time the strike city of Liege. Rioters ran wild, Jan 6, in what reports described as the most vicious outburst of violence so far in the Belgian crisis.

Shortly before the rioting started, Andre Renard, assistant secretary of the Belgian General Federation of Labour, addressed a crowd of about 20,000 in the city. He said: "We have suffered to long under Flemish clerical domination. People believe that the strike is at an end, but that is only wishful thinking. The only order I am going to give you is one of action." A militant leader, this was the first time he had so strongly urged federalism.

Tear-gas, grenades, high-pressure hoses, a mounted sabre charge into the crowd...nothing stopped the rioters. Some set fire to police cars, others smashed the offices of a newspaper. Parked cars were seized by rioters to ram police armoured cars and water cannons.

Several hundred youths smashed windows of the Central Station and attempted to set fire to mail. Meanwhile, demonstrators fought pitched battles with police, using planks torn from a fence and throwing cafe chairs. The Jan 6 Government casualty list for Liege: two civilians wounded by bullets, about 12 others hurt, and 26 police and gendarmes and fireman in hospital.
