TRANSCRIPT: STRAUSS: "The 37th quadrennial convention of the Democratic Party of the United States will please come to order."



REPORTER: "Governor, you announced today that your name is going to be placed in nomination - why are you bothering, don't you understand the arithmetic of this convention?"



BROWN: "After all I began this process, it's a long and difficult undertaking and a number of people put a lot of energy and heart into this thing and they want to vote for me, they've asked me to keep my nomination in."



JORDAN: "Now there is something different about tonight. There is something special about tonight. What is different, what is special, I, Barbara Jordan am a keynote speaker. A lot of years past since 1832 and during that time ti would have been most unusual for nay national political party to ask of Barbara Jordan to deliver a keynote address. But tonight, here I am and I feel, I feel that notwithstanding the past, that my presence here is one additional bit of evidence that the American dream need not forever be deferred."



The only item of suspense that is left for the convention is Mr. Carter's choice of a vice-presidential running-mate. He has shortlisted six men - Senators John Glen of Ohio, a former astronaut; Walter Mondale of Minnesota; Edmund Muskie of Maine; Henry Jackson of Washington State; Adlai Stevenson of Illinois; and Frank Church, a former candidate for the presidential nomination. A seventh candidate for running-mate - Congressman Peter Rodino of New Jersey - dropped out of the race at the last minute.

Background: Cheering United States Democrats opened their nominating convention in New York on Monday (12 July) and prepared to proclaim Jimmy Carter as their Presidential candidate. The convention was opened by the party's Chairman, Robert Strauss.

SYNOPSIS: The convention hall was ablaze with red, white and blue banners. Delegates wore straw hats as part of the traditional convention carnival spirit. Mr. Carter now has 200 more votes than he needs for the nomination, dashing the hopes of Hubert Humphrey, who said he would run for President if the party called. But there is no chance of that now. Jimmy Carter will not attend the convention until nomination day on Thursday (15 July). But another candidate - Governor Edmund Brown - hasn't given up yet.

Governor George Wallace of Alabama had also hoped to get the Democratic nomination. But, he told his supporters, the party would never choose somebody from the deep South. However, in New York, the delegates were giving a loud welcome to the first black woman to address a Democratic convention - Barbara Jordan of Texas.
