"Since April 6 and 7, the time when I decided to accent the candidature (of the presidency) the foreign situation as it has been shown by the conference in Geneva, has worsened. If any results should be achieved in Geneva, a series of summit conferences will follow, during which great caution and vigilance will be urgently needed. If however, Geneva should not result in any agreements to induce President Eisenhower to agree to a summit conference, the foreign situation would become even more difficult and unpleasant. In view of this development, I believe it to be my responsibility to continue as Federal Chancellor. During the last 10 years, right from the start of the Federal Republic, foreign policy has been conducted with my constant collaboration and I have been responsible for it as Federal Chancellor, and for some years as Foreign Minister and Federal Chancellor. I am referring to the years when I held the offices of Foreign Minister and of Federal Chancellor simultaneously.
Therefore I find it impossible to leave my post as Federal Chancellor in such a critical phase as the one we are facing now. This would create a very bad impression in Germany as well as abroad. I believe it to be in the interest of Germany as well as those of the party to continue the policy which we have pursued until now to this very critical phase of development."
Dr. Adenauer has decided to postpone from June 11 to June 15 the meeting of the special body charged with selecting a new Christian Democratic presidential candidate. It was this body which chose Dr. Adenauer on April 17.
Reasons given for postponement are that a meeting on June 11 might clash with the budget debate - and to allow time to look for another candidate.
Dr. Adenauer's decision to remain as Chancellor has been widely criticized - and a major revolt against him in his own party, the Christian Democrats, cannot be ruled out.
