Background: An elderly woman was killed, houses demolished and others severely damaged when the dam of a lake burst near Pye, Osnabruk on October 25.
The lake was used by a firm of masons who used the water to wash and prepare stonework. The damage occurred when a mid-bank dam gave way and released thousands of gallons of water and mud over the adjoining community.
The force of the torrent swept away the earth beneath a railway line, leaving it hanging crazily over a sea of mud. Houses collapsed, undermined by the rapid erosion.
The house in which the old woman lost her life was situated close by the one seen with its superstructure standing precariously on severely damaged walls.
