Background: Hong Kong still had the overall lead in the Admirals Cup series for ocean-going yachts after the second inshore race near Cowes. A strong breeze that freshened to near gale force caused trouble for many of the boats in the fleet which was led across the finishing line by two Irish entries.

SYNOPSIS: At the start Hong Kong was ahead on points from the first race, but it was not certain whether the stronger conditions being experienced would suit them
In fact Blizzard of Britain was first round the bouy for the first downwind ???.

The United Stated entry Aries was not far behind but the difficulty with her spinnaker was just the start of her problems in the race.

On the downwind run the fleet kept their spinnakers flying in winds that grew to a near gael. They risked broaching like williwaw of the United States. She recovered to come sixth.

Blizzard of Britain also broached, letting Aries slip past, but it was to be a brief moment of triumph for the United States crew. They lost control of the spinnaker in the strong conditions, and while avoiding running over it in the water, the helmsman took them well off course allowing Blizzard to round the downwind bouy ahead once again. In her attempt to retrieve her position Aries passed close inshore, avoiding the worst effects of the tide.

Regardless of Ireland was the eventual winner followed home by her team-mate Golden Apple, but this effort only boosted them from sixth to fifth in the series. The Australian yachts, including Police car the third place getter, relished the strong winds, filling third, fourth and ninth places. The team has improved from fifth to third position overall, but the next races, in the English Channel and the classic Fastnet race, carry more points and will be crucial.
