Background: Climaxing a week of unrest and violent clashes between police and the University students of Madrid, some 10,000 students today(Tuesday) boycotted lectures and demonstrated in groups through the streets of the city, protesting against alleged police violence on the campus.

The main complaints rise out of the fact that detachments of armed police have been patrolling the University campus and Faculty corridors for two years. Today's demonstrations broke out over confusing reports that a girl law student, Maria Isabel Domingo, had died from head wounds after being beaten by police in earlier clashes. Police and Government sources say that Miss Domingo - who was the daughter of Atletico Madrid Soccer team trainer Marcel Domingo - was found dead of a heart attack on the steps of a Church near her home, and her death had nothing to do with the University events.

Some sources say that the case was believed to be confused with that of another girl students, Maria Cristina de Prado Junquera, who was seen bleeding from the head during the clashes - but that she had only suffered a nose-bleed and was fully recovered.

Whatever the reasons, feelings are running high in the Spanish capital and neither students nor police are showing any signs of giving way on their positions.
