Background: President Luis Echeverria of Mexico began a three-day state visit to Britain today (3 April) by lunching with Queen Elizabeth and attending a Royal Banquet in his honour at the historic Windsor Castle.
The President and his wife were met in the grounds of Windsor Castle by the Queen who accompanied her guest in open carriage through the grounds and into the castle.
Inside the castle President Echeaverria was introduced to other members of the Royal family.
His visit to Britain is part of a six-nation tour to widen Mexico's political and economic horizons. He has visit ed Canada and will be flying on to Belgium, France, the Soviet Union and China.
SYNOPSIS: As well as meeting the Royal Family, President Echeverria will have discussions with Prim Minister Edward Heath and other Ministers. They'll talk about European developments and East-West relations as well as trade and cultural affairs. But for now was enough to enjoy the sunshine and pageantry....
The month-long tour is the longest made by any Mexican head of state and is a bid to attract foreign investments, find new markets for Mexican products and discover new sources of technology. In discussing his tour, President Echeverria said he wants to try and do something in favour of peace...a problem he believes Mexico can help solve as a champion of the developing nations of the so-called third world.
At the castle, the Queen introduced the President to Princess Anne, Princess Margaret and the Duchess of Gloucester. He'll meet Prince Philip at the Royal Banquet in the evening. On Friday he'll go to Belgium, then France, the Soviet Union and The People's Republic of China. President Echeverria has already visited Canada as part of this tour.
