Background: TANEGASHIMA SPACE CENTRE AND IBARAGI, JAPAN

The Japanese National Space Development Agency successfully launched a weather satellite from the Tanegashima Space Centre on August 3--the third such Japanese device to be shot into geostationary orbit. The launch of the satellite--named the Himawari 3 (sunflower 3)--immediately followed the path determined by ground control technicians in Ibaragi. First stage separation of the booster rockets was successfully completed after less than two minutes, and shortly afterward, people in the Japanese city of Kagoshima could clearly view the rocket's smoke lines and vapour trail left by the orbiting equipment. Himawari 3 is designed to replace the first and second satellites in the Himawari series which began to encounter difficulties in sending cloud formation pictures and other data to the ground receiving station.
