Background: Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme met West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt over lunch on Thursday (21 November) to discuss the European political situation and review problems besetting the world economy.

High on the agenda were problems arising from the energy crisis. And a Bonn statement described the discussions as "very valuable".

Mr. Palme's one day unofficial visit was to enable both politicians to get to know each other better. The Swedish Premier had maintained close relations with the former Chancellor, Willy Brandt -- who he was due to see on Thursday evening -- but links with Bonn had been reported more distant since Herr Schmidt took over as Chancellor.
