Seventy-two thousand race fans crammed the Darlington raceway this afternoon for the traditional running of the Labour Day Southern 500 Stock Car Race. The fans were treated to a great wheel-to-wheel finish between David Pearson and Bobby Allison in a drama of three wrecks.



The first occurred on the thirteenth lap when Johnny Allison spun out and took with him Bobby Ivey, Leroy Yarborow and Jos (Indistinct). Four of the big names of the car would out before the race had completed is thirteenth lap. The next wreck occurred on the 126th lap when Buddy Baker ploughed into Dick Brookes. Brookes was spun for a moment, stayed in his car but was all right. Baker got his car to pit row and got it back on the track -- at least momentarily. But...(indistinct) the race between the Chevrolet of Bobby Allison and the Mercury of David Pearson. That continued all afternoon. The third wreck occurred on the 276th lap when C.C. Spencer's car, driven in this race by Jos Perton, collided with Larry Smith. Jos was caught in the middle of the accident. He suffered a cut on the forehead, was taken to the track hospital, treated - and released.



The race continued, however, between Bobby Allison and David Pearson. The royal battle over the final twenty laps and a pitstop. This pitstop for Bobby Allison put David Pearson in the lead but the quick work of the Bobby Allison pit crew got the Chevrolet back on the track as soon as possible, and he continued to chase David Pearson for the chequered flag. Five laps to go on the back side and the Chevrolet of Allison finally passed the Mercury of Pearson, and it put Bobby Allison in a position to win his second consecutive Southern 500 Stock Car race, by a scant three yards over second place finisher David Pearson. That was a signal for a twenty-one thousand, forty dollar richer Bobby Allison to make it to Victory Lans where he was greeted by Junior Johnson and the rest of the fantastic Allison pit crew.
