Background: A children's rally at Independence Stadium, Kuala Lumpur, Aug 31 marked Malaya's third independence anniversary. Other celebrations were cancelled because of the grave illness of the Paramount Ruler, who died the following day.
At the rally was Deputy Paramount Ruler, Syed Sir Putra, Rafa of Perlis, who, at the age of 39, is now expected to become the Paramount Ruler. Another leader watching the children was Premier Tunku Abdul Rahman.
The Paramount Ruler, also known as Head of State, and bearing the Malayan Title of Yang di Pertuan Agong, was elected by his fellow state rulers of the Federation only last April, after the death of independent Malaya's first Paramount Ruler. He was to have been installed on Sept 1, the day of his death, for a term of 5 years.
He was 62, and was also Sultan of Selangor State. Soon after taking supreme office he officially ended the 12-year-long state of emergency caused by Communist rebels.
