Background: Budapest has become one of the most polluted cities in the world. Chimneys pour smoke into the air and a haze hangs over the city. The number of motor vehicles is increasing rapidly and these are adding to the pollution of the air.
Hungarians are aware of the problem and are trying to combat it.
They are using instruments to measure the amount of smoke in the air and checks are kept of pollution levels. In serious cases the police have the power to fine pollutors.
SYNOPSIS: Budapest has become one of the most polluted cities in the world Smoke pours into the air from industrials areas and the rapidly growing number of vehicles on the roads adds to the pollution.
The Hungarians are taking the first steps in combating the menace. Air controllers check the amount of smoke in the air and also check the source of the smoke - such as boilers, to see if they are functioning properly.
Measures are being taken to keep check on road traffic, too. Exhaust gases are tested by special instruments for excessive smoke. In extreme cases the police are empowered to fine those who are causing the pollution. Spot checks are made on vehicles in the street.
Radio Budapest reported recently that the level of air pollution in Budapest was well above the level which human organs could permanently endure without harm. The Hungarians themselves describe their moves against pollution so far as modest. They realise the problem is a serious one and will take a long time to overcome but they are pushing ahead with the job.
