Background: The Soviet Union has called on western countries to work for closer co-operation with the Communist States to ensure international peace and security.

In a joint statement issued on Friday (9 May) to mark the 30th anniversary of the fall of Nazi Germany, Communist Party General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev and premier Alexie Kosygin called for particular consolidation of U.S.- Soviet relations.

Mr. Brezhnev said the communist victory in South Vietnam could give a new impetus to detente with the U.S. and lead to a major improvement in the international climate.

The General Secretary led Kremlin leaders in paying homage to their country's war dead in remembrance ceremonies in Moscow.

The Soviet leaders laid a massive wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, while the youth movement marched in Red Square to pledge that they would follow their predecessors' example.

A gala reception was held in the Kremlin. Delegations from the Soviet's wartime allies in the anti-Nazi coalition - the U.S., France and Britain - all attended.
