Background: The trial of ex-S.S. Sergeant Richard Bugdalle began in Munich, Germany, Jan 18. He is accused of murdering at least 28 inmates of Sachsenhausen concentration camp, where he was a guard.
Former inmates of the nazi camp described how Bugdalle made prisoners stand naked in freezing temperatures and then hosed then with icy water until they froze to death. Another witness, responsible for keeping count of the dead in Bugdalle's camp block, said that on one day alone he counted 120 dead prisoners, most having died from exposure, or burst lungs.
His trial - expected to last three weeks - is one of a series of major war crimes trials to be held in West Germany this year. Following a conference of Ministers of Justice of the German States last year, an agency was set up to bring to justice nazi war criminals who had escaped detection and were still in hiding.
About four hundred cases are being investigated, and already a number of wanted men have been found.
