Background: Tottenham Hotspur, in a dominant mood, defeated Everton 2 - 1 today to hold third place in the first division.

Brian Laborne, Everton and England centre-half, was carried off on a stretcher after only eight minutes play and taken to hospital with extensive leg injuries.

The England team manager, Sir Alf Ramsey, was at the match. He is looking for a captain to lead England in the Nations Cup-tie in Malta next Wednesday. Former Captain Bobby Moore was not selected in the side to play in Malta.

Sir Alf now has other problems. Apart from Laborne the only centre half in the side four other players selected for the Malta side were injured today - Lee, Bell, Clarke and Cooper. Chivers of Spurs and McFarland of Derby have been called into the squad so far.

Laborne was injured when he and Martin Chivers of Spurs fell heavily. Laborne got up and hobbled around, but a trainer who ran to his aid called ambulancemen.

Spurs, inspired by captain Alan Mullery, were in a dominating mood from the beginning. On his form today Mullery was tipped to take over the England captaincy.

Spurs scored after 20 minutes when Chivers put the bell into the not for his 22nd goal of the season. Martin Peters took a free kick and Chivers out jumped the opposition to head the ball into the net.

Everton equalised in the 43rd minute. From a free kick in midfield Kendall ran around several Spurs players and crossed to Royle who headed it in.

Spurs scored again in the second half. Mullery took a corner kick and put the ball accurately into the Everton goalmouth. Peters hooked the ball to Gilzean who pivoted and guided it between two Everton players for the winning goal.
