Background: The Deputy Prime Minister of Greece, Mr. Nikolaos Macarezos, met with Premier Chou En-lai in Peking on Tuesday (23 May).

Their discussions took place during Mr. Macarezos' visit to the Chinese capital for trade and foreign policy discussions.

Accompanying Mr. Macarezos was his wife, Constantinos Michalopolos, Greek Secretary of State and Nicolas Katapodis, Greece's Ambassador to Peking.

Observers said the talks proceeded in a "friendly atmosphere".

Mr. Macarezos was welcomed in the Chinese capital on Sunday (20 May) at a banquet in the Great Hall of the People, draped in the national flags of Greece and The People's Republic. At the banquet, Vice-Premier Li Haien-nien said that although their two nations were far apart, he was confident relations between their two nations would continue to improve on the basis of economic and cultural exchanges that have gone on for many years.

At a return banquet on the eve of his departure, Mr. Macarezos praised the bilateral spirit of cooperation between the two countries, as shown by the signing of the three economic agreement during his week-long visit and talks with Chinese officials.

"Before winding up our visit," Mr. Macarezos said, "to your great hospitable country, I assure you, as well as the government and people of my country, that we have accomplished our mission and that the spirit of sincere friendship, good will and mutual understanding predominant in our talks as well as the results of these talks justify the aspirations with which we started our voyage."
