Background: The Deputy Prime Minister of Greece, Mr. Nikolaos Macarezos, met with Premier Chou En-lai in Peking on Tuesday (23 May).
Their discussions took place during Mr. Macarezos' visit to the Chinese capital for trade and foreign policy discussions.
Accompanying Mr. Macarezos was his wife, Constantinos Michalopolos, Greek Secretary of State and Nicolas Katapodis, Greece's Ambassador to Peking.
Observers said the talks proceeded in a "friendly atmosphere".
Mr. Macarezos was welcomed in the Chinese capital on Sunday (20 May) at a banquet in the Great Hall of the People, draped in the national flags of Greece and The People's Republic. At the banquet, Vice-Premier Li Haien-nien said that although their two nations were far apart, he was confident relations between their two nations would continue to improve on the basis of economic and cultural exchanges that have gone on for many years.
At a return banquet on the eve of his departure, Mr. Macarezos praised the bilateral spirit of cooperation between the two countries, as shown by the signing of the three economic agreement during his week-long visit and talks with Chinese officials.
"Before winding up our visit," Mr. Macarezos said, "to your great hospitable country, I assure you, as well as the government and people of my country, that we have accomplished our mission and that the spirit of sincere friendship, good will and mutual understanding predominant in our talks as well as the results of these talks justify the aspirations with which we started our voyage."
SYNOPSIS: The Premier of China, Mr. Chou En-lai, met the Greek Deputy Prime Minister Nikolaos Macarezos on Tuesday in Peking. Mr. Macarezos was on a week-long official visit to The People's Republic of China. Mr. Chou personally greeted Mr. Macarezos, and aides before the two men held discussions on general trade and foreign policy matters.
The discussions with the Chinese Premier came midway through Mr. Macarezo visit. He had been welcomed to Peking by Vice-Premier Li Hsien-nien and honoured at a banquet in the Great Hall of the People, decorated for the occasion with Greek and Chinese banners.
Mr. Macarezos led a large delegation of Greek officials to Peking. They held talks on several trade matters and mutual matters of foreign policy.
After his meeting with Mr. Chou, which was said to take place in a friendly atmosphere, Mr. Macarezos was able to tell a farewell banquet that three economic cooperation agreements had been signed during the visit.
