Background: The Arab League's Secretary General, Mr Chedli Klibi, had a series of discussions on world affairs in Kuwait on Monday (7 April) during his tour of the Gulf States. The first of his talks on the oil-rich country took place with the Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmed al-Sabah.
SYNOPSIS: One of the main topics for discussion were the peace moves between Egypt and Israel which have divided the Arab world. The Arab league plans to convince international opinion of the need for a new round of Middle East peace negotiations. Mr Klibi also met the Kuwaiti Crown Prince, Sheikh Saad al-Abdullah al-Sabah, about the negotiations which would involve the Palestinians, Egypt, Israel and the United States. Over a million Palestinians live on the West Bank of the Jordan and Gaza under Israeli military occupation. But, about two million more live scattered about the Arab world, world many in refugee camps run by the PLO (Palestinian Liberation Organisation).
The Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah talked with Mr Klibi about the negotiations aiming at setting up an autonomous state to which Palestinian would have the right to return.
