  • Description

    TRANSCRIPT:

SMITH: "SO FAR CERTAINLY THEY'RE GOOD. OF COURSE WE ARE ONLY ENTERING THE SERIOUS TALKS, BUT I HAVE ALREADY MADE IT CLEAR TO THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT THAT I AND MY OTHER COLLEAGUES ARE HERE READY TO DO BUSINESS AND WE HOPE TO BE ABLE TO GET ON WITH THE BUSINESS."

INTERVIEWER: "YESTERDAY YOU HAD YOUR FIRST MEETING WITH MR. BOTTOMLEY. I BELIEVE YOU ARE SEEING HIM AGAIN THIS MORNING. WHEN DO YOU EXPECT TO SEE MR. WILSON?"

SMITH: "IT IS A BIT DIFFICULT TO BE CERTAIN AS FAR AS THIS ONE IS CONCERNED, BUT I HAVE MADE IT CLEAR THAT I AM READY TO SEE MR. WILSON AT ANY TIME AND I THINK THAT HE RECIPROCATES THAT FEELING. BUT, PRECISELY WHEN I HAVE NOT HEARD."

INTERVIEWER: "I REALISE MR. PRIME MINISTER THESE ARE EARLY DAYS, BUT HAVE YOU ANY IDEA HOW LONG YOU ARE GOING TO BE HERE?"

SMITH: "THIS AGAIN IS DIFFICULT TO FORECAST, BUT I THINK WE HAVE TENTATIVELY RESERVED OR RETAINED SEATS THIS WEEKEND, AND WITH A LITTLE BIT OF LUCK WE MIGHT BE HOME THIS WEEKEND."

INTERVIEWER: "AFTER THE FIRST ROUND OF YOUR TALKS WITH MR. BOTTOMLEY YESTERDAY, YOU SAID THAT THE POLITICAL CLIMATE WAS COOL. COULD YOU AMPLIFY THAT PLEASE?"

SMITH: "WELL, I THINK THAT SOMEBODY FIRST ASKED ME IF THE CLIMATE INSIDE WAS WARM AND I SAID THAT IT WAS WARMER THAN IN RHODESIA. AND I WAS INDICATING COOL AS OPPOSED TO HOT. PERHAPS A MORE APPROPRIATE WORD WOULD HAVE BEEN FAVOURABLE, AND THE FIRST MEETING WE HAD, ADMITTEDLY MORE A SOCIAL ONE THAN ANYTHING ELSE, A LITTLE BIT OF BUSINESS, WENT OFF VERY WELL."

SMITH: "WE HAVE HAD A VERY CONSTRUCTIVE TALK THIS MORNING, AND ANOTHER MEETING TOMORROW. WE COVERED A LOT OF GROUND, AND WE WANT A LITTLE BIT OF TIME NOW TO DO A BIT OF STUDY."

INTERVIEWER: "YOU HAVE GOT FURTHER FORWARD THEN?"

SMITH: "YES, IN FACT IF IT CONTINUES LIKE THIS WE MIGHT EVEN SURPRISE YOU."

INTERVIEWER: "NO FURTHER MEETING THIS AFTERNOON, SIR?"

    SMITH: "NO."
