    Sudan has a national university in Khartoum, and there is an Islamic University at Omdurman. In addition, Cairo University in Egypt has a Khartoum branch. The Sudanese Minister of Education, Dafalla El Haj Yousif, said at Juba that education was the key to progress-its guiding thought and propelling force. He said higher education in the Sudan had been reorganised according to a new strategy which would make it a source of intellectual and technological radiation for society at large.

    Background: President Nimeiri of Sudan has opened the first national university outside Khartoum, at Juba in the south of the country. Juba is the capital of Sudan's Southern Region, and the President called the new university a citadel for peace.

    SYNOPSIS: Much of the money for the new university came from Kuwait, and from the European Economic Community. President Nimeiri is the first Chancellor of what is the first of a number of new higher education projects to be completed in Sudan. It was an occasion for considerable celebrations.

    President Nimeiri arrived for a two day visit to Juba, greeted by local regional officials and members of the university faculty. After cutting the tape of officially open the new buildings, the President told the assembled teachers and officials that Juba would be a unique and pioneering university, where learning combined with work to tie the objectives of education to the needs of the environment and the demands of development. He said it would be a university that would transcend abstract scientific research to come to grips with realities, and ensure harmony between man and his environment through scientific planning and training.

    The Sudanese Government have said their objective is the equitable distribution of educational opportunities among the different regions of the country. To this end, in the next two years alone, another university and two agricultural instituters will be opened in various parts of Sudan.
