Background: U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff. General Curtis E. LeMay arrived in Japan Sunday for a three day visit and conference with Japanese Air Self-Defense Force officials. LeMay and six other top U.S. Air Force Generals all of whom had played major roles in the creation of the Japanese Self Defense Force landed at the Yokota Air Base after a flight from Hongkong.

Today, General LeMay visited the Iruma Japanese Air Base where he inspected the Japanese air force men. LeMay, former commander of the last Bomber Command which raided Tokyo during World War II, was decorated by the Japanese government with the first order of Merit of the Grand Cordon of the Rising Sun at the base by the Japanese commander of the Iruma base. The decoration is for his contribution to the development of Japan's Self-defense system after 1953. However, the government's decision to decorate LeMay drew criticism from socialists, who claimed LeMay was responsible for the atom bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima back in 1945. On the other hand, Mr. Genda Minoru, a member of the House of Councillor, former Naval Wing commander who raided the Pearl harbour on the 8th of December, 1941 was decorated in the United States by order of late President Kennedy. There are a lot of arguments among Japanese about this decoration though the majority of Japanese think that we should decorate for General LeMay whatever he had done for Japanese Self-Defense Forces and should not argue for what he had done long time ago as it is useless. However, the socialists say they shall accuse the Japanese government not General LeMay in person as he conducted the operation by order of the President of the United States.
