    Background: Leaders from four countries within the French Community - formerly known as French Equatorial Africa - met President Charles de Gaulle at the Elysee, Paris, July 4, to notify him officially of their countries' desire for independence.

    Representing Chad, French Congo, Ubangui-Sharri - now the Central Republic - and Gabon respectively, were Prime Minister Trombalbaye; President of the Republic of the Congo, Abbe Fulbert Youlou; Prime Minister David Dacko; and Prime Minister Leon M'ba.

    All four countries have announced their desire for independence within the French community. No announcement was made after the Elysee meeting.
