Background: Watched by a 70,000-strong crowd, Stirling Moss, Britain, driving a Porsche, won the seventh annual South African Grand Prix, over 80 laps totalling 195 miles, at East London, Dec 27.
Though not contributing to the world championship, the event was the first grand prix to be held under the new 1961 1 1/2-litre formula, officially effective from Jan 1.
Moss, never seriously challenged, took 2hr. 11min. 2sec., an average speed of 89.24 m.p.h. His victory won him a giant silver bowl, a cup and GBP500. Joachim Bonnier, Sweden, set a lap record in another Porsche and was second to finish. World champion Jack Brabham, Australia, was third in a Cooper-Climax.
