Background: U.S. Assistant Secretary of State, Mr. Joseph Sisco resumed talks on Wednesday (4 August) with Israeli leaders on proposals to reopen the Suez Canal. While Mr. Sisco was engaged in the third round of talks with Prime Minister Mrs. Golda Meir, her Defence Minister....Mr. Moshe Dayan, Foreign Minister...Mr. Abba Eban, and Deputy Prime Minister....Mr. Yigal Allon, there were hints that the Assistant Secretary of State would not leave Israel entirely disappointed. Reuter reports that political sources pointed to General Dayan's recent statement suggesting notice should be taken of the Egyptian President's warning of war, if the deadlock over the canal wasn't broken politically by the end of the year, and interpreted the General's statement as indicative that something should, and was, being done to keep prospects alive. The Israeli evening newspaper, "Yediot Ahronot", has reported that Mr. Sisco and Israel's leaders have agreed not to link the issue of further arms supplies with the question of a Suez agreement.

SYNOPSIS: The Prime Minister's office of Mrs. Golda Meir in Jerusalem, where Israeli officials gathered on Wednesday for a further round of talks with the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State, Mr. Sisco, on the re-opening of the Suez Canal. The United States Ambassador in Israel, Mr. Barbour, also attended.

When Mr. Sisco arrived at the Knesset buildings, he was given a bouquet of flowers, which he'd ordered earlier, to present to Mrs. Meir.

Journalists in Jerusalem expect the continuing talks to achieve noticeable progress, particularly following General Dayan's warning that Egypt should be taken seriously when it recently threatened war, if the present deadlock wasn't broken politically by the end of the year.

In the meantime, the talks between Mrs. Meir and Mr. Sisco continue.
