Background: Compere: Today years of campaigning to end the threat of shipwreck on one of the most treacherous stretches of coastline in Britain came to an end.It ended with the official opening of the Tater Du Lighthouse on the western fringe of Mounts Bay, hear Penzance.David Lomax reports.
The new lighthouse at Tater Du is the first automatic lighthouse of its kind in Britain and the first to be built by Trinity House for more than 60 years.
But more than this the Tater Du light is a victory for all the local fishermen and others who've campaigned for it for so long.
On this stretch of the coast between Lands End and the Lizard 22 ships have been wrecked and 39 lives lost. The Duke of Gloucester landed today at the cliff tops in a helicopter of the Royal Flight and then was taken down a steep 300 foot ramp to the lighthouse and landrover.
One of the ten Elder Brathern of Trinity House is Captain David Tibbits.I asked him about the difficulties they'd had building the lighthouse.
