Background: Members of the Nigerian armed forces marked the 37th birthday of their country's leader Major General Gowon on October 19 with a colourful mass bands display. It was fitting that the army should honour the leader in such a way. A graduate of Sandhurst Military Academy in England, General Gowon rose from the rank of Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Army in 1957 to become Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces in 1966. To mark his birthday, massed bands of the Nigerian army took part in the traditional Beating of the Retreat ceremony in Lagos attended by General Gowon.
