Background: Zambian President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda arrived in India's capital, New Delhi, on Thursday (23 January) at the beginning of a five-day state visit.
He was welcomed during a colourful ceremony at the airport by India's President' Fakhruddin Ali ahmed and by Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi.
Dr. Kaunda has since held a series of talks with Indian leaders which culminated -- on Sunday (26 January) with the signing of three agreements and a protocol to boost mutual economic, technical and scientific co-operation. The two sides also agreed to conclude a trade agreement "as soon as possible" and to study the prospects for Indian collaboration in setting up joint industrial ventures in Zambia.
On Saturday (25 January) Dr. Kaunda was awarded his host nation's prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Award for promoting international understanding. The award carries a citation and 10,000 rupees (about 5,500 pounds sterling,about 13,000 U.S. dollars) in cash.
Dr. Kaunda's visit to India is part of a nine-day tour of the region. He had already visited Mauritius and will go on Sri Lanka before returning home.
