NASA is testing a new type of aircraft with the combined characteristics of a helicopter and fixed wing plane.A pair of 25-foot prop rotors are mounted on wingtip engines, enabling the XV-15 to take off and land like a helicopter.Once airborne the engines are rotated forward to give the XV-15 speeds of up to 350mph, and the workload of a light aircraft.

NASA say another plus for the XV-15 is quietness.It makes less noise in take off and landing than a helicopter and is much less noticeable than a conventional aircraft in flight at one thousand feet over a city.
