Background: Dr. Henry Kissinger, U.S. Secretary of State, flew home to Washington today (15 October) after a seven-day tour of the Middle East, during which his plan for permanent peace in the area found wide support among the Arab and Israeli governments.

Yesterday (14 October) Dr. Kissinger had top-level meetings in three Arab capitals - Damascus, Cairo and Algiers.

In Damascus, he met Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad and reported to him the results of discussions he had had with Arab and Israeli leaders. Dr. Kissinger said the results of his talks with the Syrian leader had been encouraging.

Earlier, in Cairo, where he met President Anwar Sadat and Foreign Minister Ismail Fahmi, Dr. Kissinger reviewed the prospects for peace, adding that there appeared to be positive indications of progress. He had been warmly welcomed by President Sadat on his arrival.

Immediately after the talks, Mr. Fahmi left for Moscow for consultations on the Middle East with Soviet leaders. After his damascus visit, Dr. Kissinger flew to Algiers and met Algerian President Houari Moumedienne for further consultations. One outcome of Dr. Kissinger's peace plan is expected to be the resumtion of diplomatic links between the United States and Algeria, broken off seven years ago.

But this, like the rest of Dr. Kissinger's Middle East proposals will have to await the outcome of an Arab summit meeting planned for the end of October.

Today, after a short visit to Morocco, Dr. Kissinger flew back to Washington.
