Background: Five thousand homes were destroyed in Nigeria on Friday (25 August) after the occupants had failed to obey an eviction order from the government.

The people are mainly squatters, who'd set up home in a shanty town on Victoria Island - now earmarked for a new State House, a hospital, a luxury hotel, and government offices.

The deadline for eviction - which few people apparently took seriously - was midnight on Thursday. Precisely at 5 a.m. on Friday the bulldozers began their work.

Some residents pleaded with bulldozer drivers to stop so that they could retrieve their belongings - but they were pushed back by soldiers and police.

As well as the homes of squatters, the demolition squad also razed church buildings, stores and hotels.
