SYNOPSIS: Mr Ghali was met on arrival at Rome's Leonardo da Vinci airport by the Egyptian ambassador to Italy, Mr Ghali was to spend three days in Rome and to deliver the message to the Italian president, Mr Sandro Pertini. Egypt supports a European peace initiative provided it complements the Camp David accords signed with Israel and the United States in 1978.

Mr Ghali said the objective of his visit was to strengthen relations between Italy and Egypt. He said these were important because both countries border the Mediterranean, and Egypt and Italy shared the same civilisation and the same aspirations.

Mr Ghali said another aim of his visit was to meet the head of the European Community and discuss with him efforts for the Palestinian people and the aid which Egypt wanted to give to Palestine.
