Background: DELEGATES FROM THIRTEEN WEST AFRICAN STATES ARE ATTENDING A CONFERENCE IN DAKAR, THIS WEEK ORGANISED BY THE FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ORGANISATION OF THE UNITED NATIONS.

DELEGATES FROM THE IVORY COAST, DAHOMEY, UPPER VOLTA, GHANA, GUINEA, LIBERIA, MALI, MAURITANIA, NIGER, NIGERIA, SENEGAL, SIERRA LEONE, AND TOGO ARE ATTENDING THE CONFERENCE. THERE ARE ALSO EUROPEAN OBSERVERS. THE AIM OF THE CONFERENCE IS TO DEFINE AN AGRICULTURAL PROJECT FOR WEST AFRICA WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF A WORLD-WIDE PLAN BEING DRAWN UP BY THE F.A.O. OF THE UNITED NATIONS. IT IS HOPED TO HAVE THE PLAN IN OPERATION WITHIN TEN YEARS.

THE SESSION WAS OPENED WITH AN ADDRESS BY M. AJALA, DIRECTOR OF PRODUCTION OF THE F.A.O. HE TOLD THE DELEGATES THAT THE CONFERENCE SHOULD TRY TO OUTLINE THE PROBLEMS POSED BY THE GAP BETWEEN PRODUCTION AND DEMAND THROUGHOUT THE WEST AFRICAN AREA IN ORDER TO MAKE BETTER USE OF INTERNATIONAL TECHNICAL ADVANCES.

MR. KASSE, DIRECTOR OF THE SUB-REGIONAL OFFICE OF THE UNITED NATIONS, SAID THE CONFERENCE WAS AN EXAMPLE OF THE COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE UNITED NATIONS, ITS SPECIALIST BODIES, THE AFRICAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY, AND THE COUNTRIES OF WEST AFRICA....
