Lent celebrations in Ashbourne take the form of no rules football game.
Full title reads: "Derbyshire. All through ... and all around the town. Ashbourne celebrates advent of Lent with football game which has no rules and whose very origin is lost in the mists of our ancient history."
A large ball is tossed into the middle of a crowd to begin the annual Lent game. People rush about on snow covered field chasing ball.
Game moves into town streets. Crowds push and pull ball in one direction and another. Game approaches river and people jump in to retrieve ball. The ball is thrown out of the river and the game moves on.
