• Short Summary

Glamour filled cabaret at Piccadilly Hotel: showgirls and Val Rosing perform Red Indian number, including semi-naked male dancer!

  • Description

Full title reads: "And now Pathetone is taking you over to the Piccadilly Hotel, London for a glance at Philip Moss Vernon's Cabaret: 'Beauties of 1937'."

The narrator sets the scene: it has gone midnight and we're watching dancers "trip the light fantastic" to the jazzy music of Billy Gerhardy (sp.?) and his band. Various shots of couples dancing on floor, older men and women sit at tables sipping cocktails and watching - all very glamorous.

Various shots of glamorous showgirls performing the "Indian Dance". They shimmy onto the dance floor wearing sparkling gowns and feathered head-dresses to vaguely Native American jazz music. Singer, Val Rosing dressed as Liberace-style Red Indian Chief. He performs song - 'Hiawatha Lullaby'.

Various shots of new set of showgirls entering to dance more energetic Red Indian dance. A male dancer enters wearing nothing but feathers and pants. His body is painted with metallic paint - gold or silver. He writhes around floor, performing what the narrator calls - "the taboo dance - you've heard a lot about it". We see the curtain fall at the end of the performance.

Note: No written records accompany this item - any information about correct spelling of 'Gerhardy' gratefully received. AH 2001.
