• Short Summary

Olympic Bronze medalist Brian Phelps shows diving techniques on a trampoline in East Ham, London.

  • Description

Upside-down M/S of three boys standing at the edge of a trampoline; C/U of 16-year-old Brian Phelps standing upside down on his hands on the edge; M/S as he springs into an upright position, turns a somersault and starts to bounce up and down.

More boys and an instructor are standing around the trampoline and watching; it is set up outside Thomas Lethaby School in East Ham, London and it looks freezing cold! Brian flips back and forth and up and down expertly - commentator says he won a bronze medal for diving in the 1960 Olympic Games, and the trampoline has helped him reach near perfection on the diving board.

He stops bouncing and one of the other boys gets onto the trampoline to receive instruction; Brian attended this school until the Olympics and has come back to pass on some tips to his former schoolmates. Brian guides the boy as he does a back somersault. On the ground, Brian shows Kevin Bastin the positions for diving and jumping; he lifts Kevin up by the waist so he can try them.

Kevin tries out the moves on the trampoline as Brian shouts instructions; then Brian gets on the trampoline to demonstrate. He bounces very high and turns backward and forward somersaults - he's flipping about all over the place!

Note: There is a magazine article on file about Brian, 'The golden boy of diving trains on a trampoline and sleeps in a Turkish Bath' .
