• Short Summary

Ventriloquist Ray Alan and dummy Lord Charles on River Thames, London and other areas.

  • Description

    Mid 1960s

Title sequence - quick shots of Union Jack flag intercut with b/w stills of ventriloquist dummy Lord Charles, posing as 'Lord of the Manor'. Title card 'Britain By Jove' with coat of arms showing two elephants, pint of beer, two bottles of champagne and 'Semper Inebriate'. 'With Ray Alan and Lord Charles - Also Roddy Maude-Roxby as Cavendish'.

Reel 1. Footage cuts between (dummy) Lord Charles on a barge on the River Thames (rural area), Ray Alan (ventriloquist) in the studio describing Lord Charles' progress on his journey (presumably around Britain in this souped-up travelogue) and their chauffeur, Cavendish, who is trying to fix the car that Lord Charles sabotaged so he could get rid of Cavendish because he's a "self-opinionated oaf".

Lord Charles witters on about his glorious arrival in London, wearing an ermine cape and crown at one point, as if he's a king. Cavendish gives us some facts about the River Thames. Footage of people in boats on the Thames at Oxford, looking up at a church spire and singing. Back to Cavendish, fixing the car and talking about Oxford. Several shots of old college buildings in Oxford; student looking at chained books in library. Cavendish talks of Henley; shots of Henley Regatta - rowing teams, pleasure boats on the river, people sitting at riverside pub. Cavendish pushes car past camera and out of shot; we hear a loud splash and he walks back into shot, shrugs and walks off. C/U of bald, bespectacled man holding up beer glass as if to say 'cheers' and drinking, with sound of someone burping.

Cavendish tries to hitch a lift from Lord Charles but he won't have it; library footage of cannons firing. Several shots of Cliveden House and grounds, Windsor Castle, marching Guards, St George's Chapel (interior), interior of Westminster Abbey (Lord Charles talks of all who are buried there). Windsor Castle from river, scenic shots of river bank. Shot of folly on riverbank (Charles is apparently relieving himself behind it). Hampton Court from river. People on pleasure boats. Couples dancing to traditional jazz on the boat. Cavendish riding bike along bank with megaphone. Battersea Funfair; people on rides. Aerial view of River Thames in London - Houses of Parliament. (Continued in Reel 2.)
