  • Short Summary

The explorer Dr Cooke arrives in Copenhagen and aviation pioneer Mr Ellehammer tries to take off.

  • Description

"Twenty years ago a gaily decorated ship returned from the far North. In it was Dr. Cooke!" Shot of large boat at sea approaching the camera. Side view of the boat, it has smoke emerging from a funnel and is decorated with many flags. M/S of the captain - presumably Dr. Cooke.

"The present Danish King (then Crown Prince) and a big crowd met the famous North Pole "discoverer" High angle shot of a small launch arriving at the quayside. Dr Cooke and other dignitaries disembark and are greeted by crowds. The dignitaries tip their hats. "But, what this Copenhagen crowd would have said if they had known the truth is another matter." Low angle shot of Dr Cooke on a balcony waving to crowds below.

"How many of us remember the first "take offs" (however brief) in aeroplane evolution?" Various shots of an early flying machine attempting to leave the ground. "This is the 1906 effort of one of the earliest pioneers, Mr Ellehammer" Another shot of the large aircraft struggling to take off. "He claimed to be the first man to get off the ground in a motor-driven 'plane." The plane travels along the ground but doesn't appear to leave it. The men who have been running after it lift their hats off, as if in victory - perhaps it did leave the ground!
